0blique 0ntologies invites visitors to assemble meaning from a finite set of drifting letters.
It began, as usual, with an error: a machine was instructed to generate anagrams of Department of Ontological Cartography.
Subsequent review determined that, while none of the resulting phrases are mathematically valid anagrams, they are, nonetheless, poetically persuasive.
Over time, activity shifts from playing with a toy to negotiating with a system. The participant assembles meanings. The machine assembles – then disassembles – meanings. The source phrase itself resists reconstruction. Meaning accretes and dissipates in hyperkinetic rhythm.
The machine cannot count; the Department withholds judgment.
